The Fishtank Testament Learning to Be Poor Miles Walker 9781934938461 Books Reviews
- This little book has some gems in it that will make you laugh although it's fundamentally a sad story. The author seems to believe everyone will have to make some kind of decision about caretaking for a relative and the healthcare system issues in the news are all represented here. There are lots of other subjects, though. The book is written in many little chapters and it takes awhile to find the threads that run through it. The sections on working in a bookstore while being a generation older than everyone else is a great description of that experience and of retail in general and there are small pieces that stand alone as moving or humorous like the poison fish warnings or a crazy couple named Randy and Blanche who keep reappearing. Some of the book deals with issues that are disturbing but still manage to have humor, like "To Pee or Not to Pee." It basically reads like a journal, from entry to entry, and although it has humor, a sense of struggle predominates. A Boomer's book. In the end, a good but not a great, read.
