  • OK. Not PC, but this is the book I read as a child, and I was curious to look at it again. Although not PC, I think it is pretty harmless and does not denigrate. Yes, it depicts people with dark skin, but they are Indian, not US Blacks. The mother does resemble Aunt Jemima, but it could also be a South Asian. And, Sambo outsmarts the tigers, so, he is hardly a character of ridicule.
  • The pictures are in black and white! The original art work is rich in jeweled colors and exquiste. Don't buy this!!! Get a colored picture version. It is not described well on the website. Beware. This is a cheap reprint of a wonderfully told old story. Don't buy this! Very disappointed. Will return.
  • I’ve always loved this story. My teachers used to read it to us. Of course, being in my late 60’s that was before all the complaints on race & we knew nothing about political correctness. I just think it’s a classic piece of literature & always thought it based in Africa where lions & tigers roam(ed) free.
  • When I was a kid in the early 80’s, I would go visit my grandparents. They had this book when it was a Little Golden book. Since then LGB probably decided the 1923 character descriptions & names in this book were not what they wanted their name attached to. Which I get. The book is way behind in times as far as race. However, I love this book. This book brings back memories of being at my grandparent’s house. I loved being there. And I miss them terribly. So when I saw this book was available on I had to buy it. I’m so glad I did. Reading it again definitely put a smile on my face.
  • Loved this story as a kid and thought all this stuff about the book being racist was nonsense, that there's no point in censoring books because that's how we learn about the past, etc. Then my copy came and I read it to my child. This is no Puddin' Head Wilson. I couldn't get through it with the characters names as written, so instead of Black* we just call them "Little Boy* Sambo", "Mama* Mumbo" and "Papa*Jumbo", and the charming story can be repeated in the modern age.

The edition we received was a low quality printing, but it was the only reasonably priced copy I could find.
  • THIS WAS MY FAVORITE BOOK AS A CHILD; SO VERY HAPPY TO HAVE A COPY OF IT ONCE AGAIN!!! THANK YOU FOR MAKING IT AVAILABLE!!! I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT SEE ANY INFERENCE OF THIS BEING RACIAL WHATSOEVER!!! IF DISCRIMINATION IS BEING IMPLIED IN THIS BOOK, IT WOULD BE DUE TO HUMANS PUTTING IT IN THERE ON THEIR OWN ACCORD. GOD HELP THOSE PEOPLE!
  • i couldve dont better on my librarys photo copier. atrociously bad print quality. black and white and couldnt even see details.
they should be ashamed to even sell this garbage.
so disappointed because I loved this story as a child but this product is an insulting rip off.
  • Not a very good rendition of the original. The pictures are not in color and not well done.
Have you actually partnered with the SPLC? They are a Communist Front Organisation.
If you did, why would you do it? They are the enemy! And they will advise you to not do business with pro American conservatives.
    Where are your loyalties?

The Gospel of Trees A Memoir Apricot Irving 9781451690460 Books Reviews

  • Amazing. This book stares directly in the face of difficult choices and finds beauty. She doesn't shy away from looking for truth and refuses to take the easy path of demonizing the people we don't agree with. She makes you think about what that desire to "save the the world" costs yourself, your family and the people you are trying to save while not letting go of our need to care deeply about each other and the Earth. An amazing read and one that made me sorry to turn the last page.
  • A very fascinating book to read, a page-turner that I finished in 2 days. It doesn't provide a magic answer to helping the country, but provides a compelling story that makes you think. It's the kind of book (or movie) that when you finish it, you want to go out for coffee with friends to discuss it and try to wrestle with the tough problems to solve.
  • I really enjoyed reading this book. Having been to Haiti multiple times on mission trips, I have learned a few things about Haiti. I've also grown to love the people of Haiti and the country. This book taught me so much about Haiti. It also taught me about the struggles and challenges of being a missionary in Haiti. It is also a story about family and the relationships of people in this particular family and the challenges that they met. The author's father grew to love Haiti and to pass that on to his children and others. Haiti is not a simple country. It is very complex. This book helped me understand a little bit about the relationships of people within Haiti as well as the struggles of people who try to "help" Haiti. Haiti is a beautiful country with beautiful people. Many people just see it as a country in need but it is so much more. This book helps to share that thought. It may not always be an easy book to read as it may challenge your perceptions but it may help you grow.
  • Apricot paints the complexity of Haiti, mission work, adolescence, family, race, culture, history and more with bold, fluid strokes and subtle shades that challenge both the intellect and emotions. Her daring vulnerability provides the kind of beautiful and at times uncomfortable honesty that gives life to a collection of stories and makes them truly a memoir. Though I grew up with Apricot and am familiar with nearly all of the people, places, and major events mentioned in this book, I have learned so much by viewing them again from her perspective. This is one of the only books that I've read all the way through, then started back at the beginning and read again. There's a lot to enjoy and a lot to chew on.
  • As a piece of literature, Apricot's remarkable prose just blew me away. She managed to put across to her readers the incredible beauty of Haiti and the indomitable spirit of Haitians, things I have witnessed in my several visits there. She explained how difficult mission work is and how critical it is to understand the local culture and work with it.
My son, his wife and their two kids live permanently near St Marc managing Clean Water for Haiti , a bio sand filter operation. The Gospel of Trees resonated with me especially for that reason, but anyone interested in missions and or Haiti will find this book an invaluable resource as well.
  • Loved this book! Several times I went back to re-read a sentence, just to enjoy the beautiful flow of the words. The drama within this family is compelling. How will they manage to hold their family together? Haiti presents such beauty and deep challenges. Congratulations to A.Irving...a Great Read!
  • Compelling story that was thought provoking, insightful and grappled some of life's most difficult questions. Rare insight into the messy lives of family relationships, poverty and those who dedicate their lives to helping others. Many deep truths to be discovered in the Gospel of Trees and it deserves to be discussed throughly with a book group or with someone else that you love.
  • This moving and carefully constructed tapestry is worthy of any reader's inclusion. Ms. Irving's beautifully thoughtful descriptive skills reminds one of Barbara Kingsolver's works...particularly The Poisonwood Bible.

The science fiction classic that coined the term "time machine" and is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel. A must listen for any fan of science fiction!

"This was my first reading of this classic. It'd been on my reading list for years. Mark Twain's quote about classics being "books one always means to read but never gets around to" came to mind as I was reading. I'm so glad I got around to it. Once I started it, I could not put it down. This story is astounding in that it was written in the late 1900s. I've enjoyed time travel stories for years, and now know that Mr. Wells is the father of this subgenre. I recommend this for all ages, particularly young readers.

This is the first Amazon Classic I have read. The formatting and editing were excellent, which made it an easy, pleasurable read. This has often not been the case with other classics I have read."

  • The movie was better – how often do you hear that? Not often. I listened to the audio-book which was very well read – no issues there. The problem is that I remember the movie well and compared it to what I was listening. Are we to believe that this scientist who was intelligent enough to build a time machine and have elevated conversations with his friends, couldn’t plan even one step ahead and construct a torch in the same fashion that a caveman could. After the first time of almost being killed in the dark, we would expect him to learn from his mistakes and adapt to the circumstances. The tragedy being that the young girl dies because of his foolishness. Had the scientist died it would have just been poetic justice. In my opinion, the movie had a more believable time line and the main character made mistakes but was able to learn from them as we would expect from someone with his experience and education.
  • This was my first reading of this classic. It'd been on my reading list for years. Mark Twain's quote about classics being "books one always means to read but never gets around to" came to mind as I was reading. I'm so glad I got around to it. This is the first Classic I have read. The formatting and editing were excellent, which made it an easy, pleasurable read. This has often not been the case with other classics I have read.
  • I read this novella a long time ago with an unedited text. I thought the Morlocks were huge beings that prey upon the beautiful Eloi. Obviously my memory did not serve me well enough as I re-read this story, I have realized how unreliable memory sometimes is. The Eloi is bigger than the Morlock size-wise but it is the the smaller beings that eat the bigger one like cattle.
I am really glad to have bought this Norton edition for it is, as usual, excellent in its annotated text, generous selection of contextual information as well as the inclusion of early reviews and recent criticisms. It is critically useful for the editor to include the alternate chapters of the story; it allows the reader to see how different the unused opening chapter is from the published one. The alternate opening chapter, I incline to believe, is far too technical and boring to be appealing to contemporary readers. As the editor points out, the author has revised the main text many times. And surprisingly, what is usually claimed the first edition is NOT exactly the first. That is why this edition by Prof. Arata is particularly praise-worthy as it is the result of having compared both early editions of The Time Machine published on both sides of the Atlantic, together with the earliest edition which has not been much referred to.
Contemporary reviewers analyse the novel from various perspective but the better interpretations of the story come from reviewers in the 20th C as the editor has compiled some selections from Bergonzi and Hume, whose essays are very useful. In Cantor's essay, he puts the text in a wider perspective to fit in the imperial discourse and examines the qualities that are term "modern".
My own impression is that this work is best read alongside with The Island of Doctor Moreau as both touch upon class, degeneration and cannibalism. As a parable, this story of Mr Wells' is probably his unconscious fear of the proletariat attempt to overrun the bourgeois. In The Island of Doctor Moreau, it is the beasts that try to "get" the island visitor, who has been impersonating the master of the island. This is a tale that can be read in both ways forward and backward. Humanity in the future has fallen back in its primitive habits lower level of intelligence and cannibalism.
This is a work by a man of genius, as one early reviewer says.
  • H.G. Wells `The Time Machine` is a surprising science fiction story for a book published in 1895 (I never felt during the reading that it was such an old novella, it's quite contemporary in writing). The socialist views of the author are easy to identify in the book, but I didn't felt like they were too `imposed` on the reader; I think that such readings are a nice way of understanding other viewpoints (especially coming from other centuries).

I'm not into commenting the story line, giving synopsis or spoilers. This book is basically presenting an alternative future of the earth, exploring the technological, social and psychological aspects of that future. The story is quite plausible (given that it's a science fiction work) and I liked that the author created an almost believable future. The level of detailing is just perfect; enough details to recreate the world and character, but not too much that I got bored.

Overall, it's not an masterpiece but it's a light enjoyable science fiction read. t's quite similar to `The War of the Worlds` from H. G. Wells, which I also do recommend to people who like classic science fiction.

Note I have read this book in format, on my smartphone and device. The reading experience was good, I had no issues. I would have like a better annotated edition of the book.
  • I'm sure we've all seen the movie - or possibly the Wishbone episode ;) - so we probably all have a general idea of what happens in this book, but it still did manage to surprise me a bit. The tone is surprisingly modern for a book written over a hundred years ago and [unfortunately] the social commentary is just as relevant today as I assume it was at that time. Definitely a short read but also a good one and I especially liked his detailed descriptive language, which made it very easy to picture the world as I was reading.

“Inside this mesmerizing tale of sexual desire and discovery, naive newlyweds Henry and Effie are honeymooning in Cape May, N.J., in 1957, tentatively navigating intimacy. Then they meet Clara and Max, hard-partying lovers who dazzle the innocent pair until they’ve lost more than their virginity. Cheek’s sensual first novel leaves you wanting more.”
– PEOPLE

"Henry and Effie’s honeymoon is meant to be their introduction to the pleasures of the body, but in the company of Clara and her promiscuous cohort they lose all track of boundaries. A dozy, luxurious sense of enchantment comes over the story, until the rude awakening at its finale.... Cape May does something better than critique or satirize It seduces."
– The Wall Street Journal

A mesmerizing debut novel by Chip Cheek, Cape May explores the social and sexual mores of 1950s America through the eyes of a newly married couple from the genteel south corrupted by sophisticated New England urbanites.

Late September 1957. Henry and Effie, very young newlyweds from Georgia, arrive in Cape May, New Jersey, for their honeymoon only to find the town is deserted. Feeling shy of each other and isolated, they decide to cut the trip short. But before they leave, they meet a glamorous set of people who sweep them up into their drama. Clara, a beautiful socialite who feels her youth slipping away; Max, a wealthy playboy and Clara’s lover; and Alma, Max’s aloof and mysterious half-sister, to whom Henry is irresistibly drawn.

The empty beach town becomes their playground, and as they sneak into abandoned summer homes, go sailing, walk naked under the stars, make love, and drink a great deal of gin, Henry and Effie slip from innocence into betrayal, with irrevocable consequences.

Erotic and moving, this is a novel about marriage, love and sexuality, and the lifelong repercussions that meeting a group of debauched cosmopolitans has on a new marriage.

"Having been to Cape May, NJ many times, I was excited to get my hands on Chip Cheek’s debut novel, Cape May! This novel is set in 1957 and centers around Henry and Effie, who have just graduated high school and gotten married. The young couple decides to honeymoon at Effie’s uncle’s beach house in Cape May, New Jersey. Being that it was September, the usually bustling summer destination was empty. Then the newlyweds meet several “friends” and from that point, Effie and Henry are introduced to a fast and glamorous world that will forever alter their relationship...and the rest of their lives.

I devoured this novel in record time! The storyline was super original, full of debauchery, and extremely salacious—hence the reason I started and finished this book in the same day! I enjoyed Chip Cheek’s writing style, I was on the hook the entire way through. I really thought he did a great job with the last chapter- it was an epilogue of sorts and I LOVED that I didn’t feel the like ending left me hanging! I am looking forward to seeing what Chip Cheeks comes out with next! I would like to thank the publisher for providing me this book in exchange for an honest review."

Cape May A Novel Chip Cheek 9781250297150 Books Reviews

  • I loved getting pulled into this story. Everything seems so innocent with these young newlyweds and yet Cheek manages to thread an insidious force of nature tempting them from every angle and threatening everything from the sanctity of their union to their own morals.
Tons of twists and turns. I raced through the end. Looking forward to seeing more from this very talented author.
  • 1950s Henry and Effie are newlyweds honeymooning during the off-season in Cape May, New Jersey, in Effie’s uncle’s beach house. They don’t really know each other very well, they’re sexually inexperienced, and are having some difficulty with the awkwardness of being around each other all day. Bored and restless, they decide to leave early and go home.

BUT! They see lights on at a nearby house . . . neighbors! They get excited, thinking maybe meeting some new people will liven things up. They have no idea just how much.

Their new neighbors, Clara and Max, are not completely unfamiliar to Effie. Clara was a friend of the family while she was growing up during the summers at Cape May, and Clara often teased the younger Effie to the point of bullying. Effie is reluctant to spend any time with her, but they can’t escape Clara’s constant invitations to parties, and soon they’re captivated by Clara’s carefree bohemian lifestyle with her lover, Max.

Clara throws wild parties that quickly get out of hand, replete with gin and casual sex. She brings in cosmopolitan friends from New York, and the bumpkin Georgia newlyweds are swept away with the hedonism. This decadence, however fun at first, quickly devolves into dangerous flirtations and destruction.

The drunken sex parties got somewhat repetitive, and the story takes a while to get going, but nevertheless, it maintained my interest. Just about every character is loathsome, but even though these people are self-centered and repugnant, I couldn’t help but keep reading to see what they would do. The focus on Henry’s experience offered some specific insights, but the lack of attention to other characters, specifically Effie, were detrimental to rounding out the story’s perspective. There is a strange leap forward in time in a rushed epilogue, but at least it serves to answer the curiosity of “So, what happened to them?”

It’s a fun book with a psychological bent of what superficially milquetoast people are capable of when shown a wilder side of life.

Many thanks to Celadon Books, Netgalley, and BookishFirst for the advance copy in exchange for my review.

  • It is Autumn 1957 and Henry and Effie, two young newlyweds from Georgia, arrive in Cape May for their honeymoon. Effie has known Cape May since childhood and remembers glorious summers there but this is the off season and Cape May is mostly deserted. The couple try to make the best of things, enjoying discovering each other physically, but the weather is disappointing and there is nothing to do.

After barely a week, they decide it might be best to head home, cutting their honeymoon short, when they spot lights in one of the neighbouring houses and decide to call in. And so, they meet Clara, a beautiful and dangerous socialite, her lover Max, a wealthy playboy, and Max’s beautiful and mysterious sister, Alma. Max and Clara, bored with their own company, are delighted to befriend the young newlyweds who, at first, regard Max and Clara’s risqué behaviour with disapproval. However, Effie and Henry soon find themselves sucked into this lifestyle, indulging in behaviour that they would never have contemplated back in conservative Georgia. They walk naked through the deserted streets, make love in the open air, break into the empty neighbouring houses and drink copious amounts of alcohol and, almost inevitably, Henry finds himself increasingly drawn to Alma, with disastrous consequences.

Cape May is a startlingly good debut novel, not least for its wonderful evocation of 1950’s America and specifically out-of-season seaside towns. Chip Cheek describes in detail the grand Victorian seaside houses with their slate gables, towers, porches and trellises. He allows the reader to walk with Henry and Effie and to feel the emptiness and desolation of the town with its boarded-up shops and restaurants sporting depressing signs that say “Closed for the season. See you in May!” The end of season feeling is also powerfully evoked in the description of the deserted beach and empty pier with the backdrop of stormy sea and dark sky.

All in all, this novel leaves nothing to be desired. The characterisation is brilliant, particularly Henry, through whose eyes we view the events of the tale. Engagingly innocent and hopeful at the beginning, we witness his gradual change as he falls into behaviour that inevitably teaches him that life is often about loss and compromise. Cape May is also very sexy. The many sex scenes are pretty graphic but exceptionally well written – something of a rarity. This is a sensitive portrayal of the social and sexual mores of 1950’s America but it is also really seductive storytelling – a wonderfully exciting read – one of those novels that you’ve just got to read in one sitting.

It took her more than a decade to realize what she was actually trying to write how this affected her relationship with her mother. When it was finally published, the essay went viral, shared on social media by Anne Lamott, Rebecca Solnit, and many others. The outpouring of responses gave Filgate an idea, and the resulting anthology offers a candid look at our relationships with our mothers.

While some of the writers in this book are estranged from their mothers, others are extremely close. Leslie Jamison writes about trying to discover who her seemingly perfect mother was before ever becoming a mom. In Cathi Hanauer’s hilarious piece, she finally gets a chance to have a conversation with her mother that isn’t interrupted by her domineering (but lovable) father. André Aciman writes about what it was like to have a deaf mother. Melissa Febos uses mythology as a lens to look at her close-knit relationship with her psychotherapist mother. And Julianna Baggott talks about having a mom who tells her everything.

As Filgate writes, “Our mothers are our first homes, and that’s why we’re always trying to return to them.” There’s relief in breaking the silence. Acknowledging what we couldn’t say for so long is one way to heal our relationships with others and, perhaps most important, with ourselves.

Contributors include Cathi Hanauer, Melissa Febos, Alexander Chee, Dylan Landis, Bernice L. McFadden, Julianna Baggott, Lynn Steger Strong, Kiese Laymon, Carmen Maria Machado, André Aciman, Sari Botton, Nayomi Munaweera, Brandon Taylor, and Leslie Jamison.

"Michele Filgate has curated this beautiful collection of essays that explore a vast range of complex and challenging maternal relationships. Led by her own powerful piece about her struggle with a mother who stays married to the stepfather who abused her, it features heartbreaking, humorous and illuminating work by literary rockstars including Kiese Laymon, Carmen Maria Machado and Leslie Jamison.

Especially moving for me were the essays by longtime favorite authors Alexander Chee, Melissa Febos and Andre Aciman, as well as new-to-me authors Nayomi Munaweera and Brandon Taylor. I will look forward to continuing to read everything they write now."

  • I absolutely love this.

A tremendous, bright, beautiful list of contributors all telling such complex, thoughtful stories about their mothers.

Made my brain whir about my own mom, the stories she has to tell, and the stories I choose to tell myself about her.

    Seriously glorious. Read it.
  • Stop whining about what was wrong with your mother and try to figure out what's wrong with you. A tired subject. Creative non-fiction is always welcome, but this doesn't make the mark.

The Templetons have inherited a fortune but there's a catch...

Minerva Templeton has a reputation for being, well, something of a recluse.
A wallflower, if you will.
However, due to her grandfather’s demands, all that must change. She must travel to the wilds of Scotland to fetch a mysterious something. Minerva cannot fathom why she should be the one to have to bring home this object but if she does not, their grandfather’s fortune will go to a most underserving man.
So off she sets to Scotland where she must brave all manner of awful things—things this wallflower avoids at all costs after a traumatic experience as a child.
But after the death of her beloved Grandpapa, she cannot help wondering if she should be brave. Bolder. Try new things.
Like meeting a handsome Scottish farmer turned wealthy landowner.
Like kissing him perhaps?
Like falling desperately in love with the brooding, wonderful man?
No, that’s a few too many new things. After all, there’s only so many new experiences a wallflower can have…

"The family gathered to hear the lawyer’s reading of their grandfather’s Will. The house would go to the grandchildren‘s mother – since grandfather had no sons. She would also receive an annual allowance of money. The grandchildren themselves would inherit the rest of his large fortune -- but only if they fulfilled certain terms and within a period of two months. If they failed at their tasks, the money would go to Mr. Hastings, a beast of a man who dishonored their cousin and ran off with a nursemaid! No one felt he deserved any money at all, which is what compelled each of them to take this seriously!

Minerva had been kidnapped as a child, and consequently she was timid and afraid of everything. She knew she had to overcome this fear that ruled her life. Her letter directly impacted those fears! She must travel to Scotland to collect something that belonged to her grandfather! She could not venture out to the next county – how would she travel far away to Scotland?? Minerva kept a smile frozen on her lips – but she could see that no one there believed this didn’t terrify her.

In the morning she woke in a strange inn, afraid to open her eyes. She took a deep breath, and saw the sunlight coming through the window. She relaxed and smiled, knowing how proud her family would be that she had made it this far. She met other people and they were courteous and friendly, not what she had always feared. Her grandfather had wanted her to summon the courage to live a proper life. He was right, and she was starting to understand. As her maid helped her dress, she noticed Mary was sweating and held her stomach briefly. Was she ill? As they continued their travel, Mary was not doing well. Minerva asked the driver to stop at a farmhouse since they would not make it to the inn for some time and Mary needed rest now.

Lachlan Sinclair was annoyed at the knocking on his door. But when he told him of the problem, he carried Mary inside. He asked the groom to take one of his horses and get the doctor. He tended his stock and returned to make a meal for them. Minerva felt very comfortable in the farmhouse. She also felt comfortable around Lachlan. There was a stillness about him that put her at ease. Yet his eyes took in everything that was happening; he would be a fine protector, she knew. She helped him dry the dinner bowls. As one slipped from her hands, they both caught it, his hands covering hers. She was breathless and had never felt like this. She was very much aware of him! When she asked, he told her he was not actually a farmer. He owned all of the surrounding lands and, while his tenant’s family was travelling, he had offered to take care of the farm and animals. But he seemed very comfortable no matter what he did. Although he missed the luxurious fabrics of his finer clothes, he did not miss wearing the cravat and breeches every day, nor did he miss being surrounded by servants.

Mary was recovering, but still weak. Lachlan told Minerva what he had thought of – that Mr. Johnson could take his place working the farm and caring for Mary. Lachlan would go with Minerva since the rest of the trip was by horseback and he thoroughly knew the area. She gladly accepted! But as they were getting ready, Mr. Johnson told her Mr. Young was now ill. He offered caring for them both – and she should go with Lachlan and complete her task. He said he knew how honorable she was, and what her family didn’t know would not hurt them. How would Lachlan feel about it? Would they safely get to the cottage and retrieve her grandfather’s item? Would there be danger to face? Or was the only danger losing her heart over the gentle Scotsman who meant so much to her already?

This is such a wonderful series, and I think this is my absolute favorite! Each has started out full of pre-conceived notions that would be completely turned around as each person grew and matured within the experiences provided to them. It was such a joy seeing how each character handled their challenge. Join in the fun of this wonderful story and see the wisdom of their grandfather in the tasks he set before his grandchildren to put them on the right course in life."

  • I must have been distracted as I was not aware of this release, one I wanted to read as I follow this series.
So here it is about Minerva’s task to fulfill her grandfather’s will.
I do not know if her grandfather was a kind of magician but each of his demands brings love in the life of his grandchildren. Minerva’s obligation was more about letting the past go than doing something. Since a traumatic event as a child, she buried herself in her London’s home, never leaving town and going out only when she felt it was safe.
So going all the way to Scotland is her grandfather’s way to free her from her fears.
Lachlan never expected, when he offered his help to take care of one of his tenant’s farm, to encounter an English lass, one so pretty he can’t comprehend she is still single and what is she doing there. And for being from the Gentry, she is no haughty person and she cares even for those under her station.
During the short time they get to know each other, they came to care for another and conquer their fears or griefs.
It was a sweet and enjoyable story of two peoples a bit lost among their world, needing each other to see what they missed really.
A 4.5 stars rate for this cute novella.
  • The Templetons, Minerva, Angel, Seth, and Theo are all attending the reading of their grandfather's will. They need the money, but they all must successfully perform a specific task in order to inherit. In books 1 and 2, we read about Angel and Seth, now it's Minerva's turn. I think it's brilliant that all four books happen concurrently, because at least the first three books can be read in any order.

Poor Minerva! After a traumatic experience fifteen years ago, she has been scared of everything. She is existing, not living; the spark has gone out of her. She has willed herself to remain a wallflower, but her task will change all that if she can do it. She is to retrieve a mysterious object in Scotland, where she has never been; and as scared as she is at first, soon the adventurous child resurfaces. She leaves, accompanied by her lady's maid Mary, but along the way, they are forced to stop at a farm. They are greeted by Lachlan Sinclair, whom Minerva at first mistakes for a mere farmer. He is big, she should be afraid, but Lachlan is kindness personified. And so begins the romance Minerva never thought she would ever experience.

Minerva and Lachlan are such adorable characters, and they have great chemistry. ONCE A WALLFLOWER, ALWAYS A WALLFLOWER is a very sweet romance with a little bit of steam. I loved how the romance progressed, it was cute and believable. The writing is lovely, it's pleasant, and so easy to read. There was just a tiny detail that puzzled me because it was inconsistent with the premise for the inheritance. I wondered if it would be addressed at some point, but it wasn't. I love that the books are short and that they are published quickly, so I don't have to wait too long. My favourite book of the series remains Seth's, but I cannot wait for the conclusion with Theo's story!
  • Samantha Holt writes delightful historical romances, and her Inheritance series is among the best of her work.

In each of these novels, one of the four Templeton siblings must complete a difficult task in order for any of the siblings to inherit from their late grandfather.

The tasks are designed to help each sibling overcome a particular character flaw/fear, and their efforts to do so are both believable and highly entertaining.

This third novel in the series is no exception, and the reader cannot help but adore shy and agoraphobic Minerva Templeton, who overcomes her traumatic past, develops her personal courage, and embraces love.

This beautiful story is well worth a click!

Commentario sul libro degli Atti
Secondo volume di due
Capitoli 14-28
